Hi Siva,
Here's some answers to your questions.

1) Both. You can expect to be asked questions about your experience, a little bit of testing, how much agile stuff you know, etc.
2) Yes. TW prefers local hires, but you will still be considered fairly.
3) Know what the company does, what languages they like to work with, clients, etc. The TW website should have plenty of material. History of the company is pretty much useless, they teach you that stuff on the first day you are hired and then you never use it again. Learn about automated testing tools, especially open source ones, and also especially ones created by current and former ThoughtWorkers. Cucumber, Selenium, WebDriver, test-unit, rspec, JUnit, etc. are all good places to start. You don't need to know all about them, just some basics to begin with. Know what BDD is, unit testing vs. integration testing vs. smoke testing, etc. DEFINITELY know about cruise control, version control systems (subversion, git, mercurial), testing theory (i.e. what to test and why) etc. The better knowledge you have around your particular job, the more qualified you will be.

Hi Joe
Firstly,I would like to thank you for taking your time and responding to all the queries from different people about Thought Works ,even though you are not associated with them. I have been searching for more info on Thought works as I have applied for for QA position and so far every person who worked for Thought Works have given positive answers on their blogs to the persons who have asked them the questions.

I have 6 months of Manual Testing Experience at Hobsons Australia in Melbourne and all I learnt was at my work place where I started as an intern and was immediately offered a contract for 6 months. All I can say is that I have a bit of knowledge about testing and Agile with no formal traning but have no knowledge on Automation tools.

So,if possible please shed some light to my below questions
1)What kind of a Telephonic interview I can expect(will it be just formal something like Tell me about yourself or from a testing point of view)
2)I have applied for Sydney branch and I live in Melbourne(will it affect the selection process)
3)What is the best way to go for the 2nd round interview apart from knowing about the Company(From which aspect I should know about the company, will it be about the history
or anything more)

I have a few questions though but will be glad if you can reply to my above questions.

Sincerely Your`s

You're right. I just re-read my post and realized I forgot a critical word. I had a salmon burrito, not just a piece of salmon. I don't expect something inedible, like bones, in a burrito. There are many things I could say about expectations, how they can be different for everyone, at different levels, in different places, from experts to laypeople, shedding them to make yourself happy, etc. My point was not about expectations, even though the restaurant and I were operating from the same basic principle: no inedible things in a food you don't pick through or look at. My point was simply about executing on basics and how getting them wrong will hurt you.

I don't understand. In England our fish are full of bones. What's the problem? Maybe we need to look at our expectations sometimes - as part of developing a sustainable lifestyle.

When I tried to use these instructions to install an old version of OpenSSL, macports refused to install the old version even though I specified the version that I had in my local repository. To make it work, I went to /Users/Shared/dports/devel/openssl and then simply did `sudo port install`. If you are in a dport folder and you issue that command it just uses the info in the current directory.

Aditi - I have no idea what sort of testing TW does now, but I remember the testing not being a huge part of your final hiring decision. I'd focus on just having fun. Being nervous won't help you at all.

Satish - TW keeps records of all applicants. You'll most likely have to go through some minor hoops, but if you were offered a role, they like you enough that you'd be considered highly over other candidates. When you re-apply, tell them that you've applied before. HR will be able to look up your old file and start from there. There are stories of people getting hired more than a year after their first application with TW due to personal reasons just like you.

Hi Joe,

I was offered a BA role by TW India almost a year back. I could not take up the offer due to personal reasons despite the enthusiasm i had to join. Now ,I would like to re-apply to work at TW . In this regard, what is their policy like? Do i have to undergo the process again or will my earlier performance be considered? Please share your thoughts. Thank you.

Kshama- I can tell you from experience that working at TW is one of the better places to work in IT. I have no hiring connection with them anymore. I could only take you as far as application anyway without knowing you, so just wait for them to contact you back. Good luck on your application. I hope you get what you want in life.

Hi,
I have been working in IT industry from long 6years. But now the enviornment building in IT comapnies is sucking me. I want to pursue my carrer as a BA but not in this kind of enviornment. Lately I have been reading a lot about TW, and this seems a bit exciting to work for. I pretty much need such kind of enviornment to work in. Hope its the same as it talks on its website. Can you guide to correct set of people for India - Pune BA job. I understand from previous comments; u no longer are part of TW, but if you may help. Just for you information i did apply online yesterday.
Wish u Merry Christmas and Happy New year!

As far as technical skills go, having experience in at least a couple of automation tools is useful. There will always be new tools and frameworks coming out, so learning one and sticking with it is not good for your career. If you can show that you've learned or built new tools to do your job recently, then you'll be totally fine.

Farjaad - You're correct that examples of domains would be insurance, media, retail, medical, etc.

For a QA, I think domain knowledge is helpful, but not always crucial. If you don't have domain knowledge, you can study it just like a BA would or else you are more dependent on your BA or product owner to know if what you are testing is correct.

The definition of a TW QA is always changing. On some teams it is a part of the dev team, on others it is a separate concern. Sometimes BAs act as frontline QAs and "formal" QAs act as automation testers. It varies so widely that it is hard to put into one definition. I would say that test case creation and automation are two key skills a TW QA needs to have.

How does Thoughtwork feel about those QA engineers who lack a few technical skills but are willing to learn quickly?

I read at their website that they want to hire brilliant people who don't necessary have depth in one technology. I infer from this that thoughtworks would be okay with those candidates who don't have experience in plethora of tools but can quickly learn them to produce results.

Thanks

Dear Joe,

Could you tell me what you meant by domains? Are you referring to industries like Insurance, media, medical etc?

For a QA engineer does having domain knowledge crucial? If yes then how can one acquire it?

According to Thoughtworks what is successful QA?

Hi Harshal. Sounds like you are in a pretty good position.

1) BA candidates that can code are highly prized. It's a pretty rare skill combination, so if you have it, that is a huge plus. The TW intelligence tests that you take are pretty highly geared toward analytical thinkers and you should pass pretty easily.

2) No knowledge of any specific domain is required unless they are hiring you for a specific project. Since I don't work there anymore, I can't tell you what would be the case, so you are on your own. The best BAs can go into any domain and know it pretty well within a few weeks. Read a few books on just about any domain and you'll be in the top 5% of people that know anything there anyway. It's very easy. What you bring as a consultant is perspective. Knowing how to learn and apply what you know is your key skill as a BA.

3) Again, reading and participating in discussions with colleagues is key. The more domains you work in, the more you'll be able to connect the major ideas and best practices from each into any new domain you enter. It's a constant game of catchup, but the bar is usually pretty low. People who spend their entire lives in one domain (full time employees for example) may often times know less than you because they don't do research outside of their own jobs, much less their own domain.

Hi Joe,
I have 5 years of experience on .NET as a Developer. My qualification is MCA and recently I have completed Executive-MBA from reputed institute.
I would like to apply for the BA position at Thoughtworks. My queries below,
1)	Does Thoughtworks prefer such candidates for BA position?
2)	Do I need to have knowledge of any specific domain?
3)	How do I prepare myself for the same?

Thanks in advance!

Great insight Joe. I love the way you tip this on it's head.
The invert always invert idea is something I have heard of best must say haven't tried nearly enough.
I am going to give it a go this week (actually right now!).

All the best. JR

According to the dictionary, sure. The way I define it here, no. They look the same to the untrained observer, but I am making the distinction between the two as a useful tool to think from. I could argue that NOTHING is complex or sophisticated because they are just words. One person's complex is another person's easy or simple.

Great analysis and proposed solution. I intentionally leave out solutions often because sometimes people tend to focus on the answers too obsessively, before the difficult work of acknowledging and identifying the problem (which needs to happen first).

But I promise you, Joe...I've written about specific solutions to this in the past, and I will again...soon.

But thanks for keeping me in check.

Hi Danny. While I don't work for ThoughtWorks anymore, I'm pretty sure their interview process is pretty similar in Australia. TW contacts you either way if they like you or not. They try not to waste your time or theirs in the application process. Sometimes it takes a few days for them to get through evaluations and other applicants.

TW University is typically where freshers are sent when TW feels they don't have enough work experience, but I've known people who have been sent there to help them get a quick immersion into the culture before they go out to see clients.

Hi ,

I read ur journal was really helpful. I just appleied for a test analyst position in sydney thoughtworks university. Do they follow the same interview process like TW. Sorry i am confused abut the word university, thought may be the int would be more like a freshers position. They send me a questionaiire and i have sent them back, Will they only call me if they like my answers? will they let me know if my application was unsuccessful coz im expecting a lot to get in to TW.

Not sure if this is necessary for everyone, but in my case, I had to edit /opt/local/etc/macports/sources.conf to include the local repository I just created and indexed, before macports would pick it up:

Hi Neil. Code reviews can take a while depending on how busy other consultants are that review your code. It usually takes a few days, but if you don't hear anything after a while, just give your recruiter a little call and they should be able to tell you the status of your review.

Just be yourself. Your attitude matters more than your aptitude for the job, especially coming out of college.

Study agile and lean methodologies and know about ThoughtWorks a bit as well. Searching the job postings will give you an idea of what they are looking for.

Hi Puneet,
I'm no longer a ThoughtWorker, so I don't think it would be fair for me to comment on their hiring practices any longer. I can say that it's mostly important to be yourself and relax.

Pairing can be a scary thing if you've never done it before and your interviewers will take that into account.

Being friendly and outgoing will go much further for you than your development skills in a particular toolset or language. You are bound to be required to write in other languages during your time at TW, so having solid fundamentals (OO, performance, optimization, refactoring, etc.) is better than knowing every bit of syntax in your toolset or every macro in your IDE.

Good luck to you.

Thanks joe, but I did get a response last week. The response was pretty strange, recruiter thinks all TW people liked me and I liked the people/culture as well but there is no position available in this economy. She will call me when a position is available after a month, or 6 months, a year. It is kind of dissapointing when something as uncertain like this happens but hopefully things will move on. I trust Obama :)

Hi Zinal,
I'm no longer employed by ThoughtWorks, so I'm not able to provide you with details, but my description above is for Professional Services employees, not Operations employees. They may give you some variation, but not nearly as technical as far as I know.

BTW - ruby 1.8.6 is *not* compatible with a header change in OpenSSL 0.9.8j. See http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/179010 for the details...

So, I used the same technique described in this article to download the Portfile for OpenSSL 0.9.8i.

svn co --revision 45087 http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/trunk/dports/devel/openssl/ devel/openssl/

Don't forget to portindex again!

I hope this helps someone!

KP,

The QA position should be similar to the outline I gave above. There will be questions about your technical experience, especially around test automation, if you have any.

Otherwise, our interviews are the same for all positions except for the developer candidates who also have the addition of a coding assignment.

Hey Joe,

I have been called for the Interview at TW Bangalore, India for QA position. How it is different than that you have mentioned above? What is the Interview / Questions pattern for QA position? On what area they might ask questions?

This is a great list of tips! I'm new to Mingle, but couldn't help notice how granular it can be. This will give me a headstart in customizing it. One thing I hope to figure out is how to get one big 'All My Work' tab to show me all my tasks since I'm on multiple projects...

Hi Lakshmi and Rajani,
The office interview consists of several tests and intensive interviews. Occasionally there are activities with other candidates as a group, but mainly just tests and interviews.
I'm not allowed to tell you much about the tests, but one is a logic test and another is a general intelligence test with a personality test for last. The scores do not weigh heavily on hiring decisions unless we're on the fence about someone. You can probably find out more details about them in other places on the internet.
The interviews are just more in depth versions of your phone interviews. They go into your experience and are looking to see if you fit the TW culture. You'll be asked all kinds of questions about your work background and probably given a few scenarios to see how you would act. The interviews weigh the heaviest on our decision to hire you, so just relax and think through questions. TWers are looking to see if they would want to work with you day after day.

Good luck,
Joe

We did alternating numbers and letters on a previous project but didn't catch the case where a one or zero stands in for the second letter of a kewl-ly misspelled four-letter word.

Fahad,
The logic assessment is like programming without actually having to program. You get a diagram that is linked by directions that you have to follow. I wouldn't stress about it too much. It is more important for devs than analysts and doesn't weigh heavily into anyone's hiring decisions unless they are on the edge.

I am business analyst with 3 years of experience. I have completed my round 1 interview with a TW India. I need to undergo the Logic assessment test and the round 2 this friday.

I would like to know what the logic assessment be like and for round 2 they have asked me to look into Agile methodology and visualization methods.

Can you let me know what can i expect for round 2?

Ankur,

You'll be asked about your experience with different testing tools and be asked to give a description of your last job(s). Your interviewers will ask you about testing theory and also get into specifics. You may be asked to write small bits of code or describe how you would test a hypothetical application. It really depends on the interviewers.

In addition, every candidate is given a logic and intelligence test. I can't tell you much about them, other than that they are straightforward and (almost) nobody ever gets them completely right.

Good luck!

Hey Praneet,

Glad to see this post is helping you. The topics for technical discussion range widely by the role you are interviewing for and the people doing the interview. They will focus on your knowledge and dig as deeply as they can into your background to get you talking about what you've done for other companies.

If you're a developer, there will be a small coding assignment and a review of the code.

The in-office tests are difficult, but I'm sure you'll be fine. Good luck!
